Discover nature-inspired Scottish art by Graham McLean. Create a bold focal point for gothic or dark academia interiors with Crow on Red. A crow skull (Corvus corone) preserved in clear resin sits against a vivid red backdrop, set on an illuminated reclaimed acacia base. This one-of-a-kind artwork pairs delicate natural detail with dramatic colour, making a distinctive statement piece or an unusual gift for someone drawn to the atmospheric and unusual side of natural history.
Lighting
Lighting plays a huge role in how this piece is experienced. Whether it’s placed in natural daylight, soft ambient light, or in a darkened area, the built-in illumination, ensures the colours, textures and the skull itself, are all shown with true depth and clarity. The lighting is powered via a simple USB connection that plugs right into the wall. It’s more than just a light—it’s a way to bring the piece to life, day or night.
I’ve included photos that show the piece in a variety of light conditions - these include in natural light with the base light both on and off.
Base
The base is crafted from reclaimed African acacia timber —each base is unique and has a beeswax finish that enhances the woods natural grain and character. I chose this wood for both its beauty and sustainability. To protect your surfaces and give the piece a finished touch, I’ve lined the bottom with baise felt. It’s a small detail, but an important one—this way, you can place it anywhere with confidence, knowing it won’t scratch or slide. Every base is made to complement the resin piece without overpowering it, grounding the artwork in something natural, warm, and solid.
